If you have one variable that you need to pass from one page to another via a query string, the simplest way to do it is to attach it to the url as "?querystring".

http://www.someplace.com?querystring.

There is no assignment needed as you would normally write by using the equals sign. For example: http://www.someplace.com?str=querystring.

If you want to remove a few lines of Javascript which would do the parsing of the returned string, this is the way to go. But keep in mind this is only beneficial if using one single variable.Otherwise I would do the whole assignment(name=value) and parsing of a querystring to keep things in order.

Now, if we had the url:

    http://www.someplace.com?querystring.

How would we get the value querystring?

I find myself using Safari(ver 3.0.4) on a PC more and more and shrugging off any IE(6 or 7) browser.

Safari is pretty nice. It's sleek looking, the color qualities and images look clear, and I like the way it displays form elements. With those features, since I am a Senior UI Developer and primarily develop the front end of applications, I needed to add Javascript handling to Safari which isn't defaulted to display errors or exceptions. It would be nice to have a Developers Kit, like what Firefox offers, but that's a far reach. Most code that I have written has worked great in Firefox and Safari, but this one time recently it was failing on me in Safari.

So to add Javascipt error catching in Safari on a PC. You have to open file Preferences.plist in a test editor.

What a long strange trip it's been!

The 07-08 Devils season is over and done with. I've been getting a lot of smack from friends and family about it (Damn, Rangers fans, Just kidding). Congrats on making it to the playoffs and through to the 2nd round. You beat the Devils all season long(Instead of 1) and finished Lou's team in 5. I didn't think you had it in ya.

But for a quick review of the season, let's look back to Oct 07 and the adversity the New Jersey Devils faced this year.

I was reading an article on livescience.com about the internet having black holes. I would assume that since an article like this exists we all experience this occurrence, of requesting a website or page and waiting for the page to display, if it does.

It stated that a group of technologists are  researching the phenomenon to find the cause and locations, of these black holes as if somewhere in the network of wires connecting us all, there's a Bermuda triangle of sorts.

Maybe the answer is a bit more simple than a black hole, and that a simple request to a remote server gets lost and disappears.

A friend took a look my site today and sent me an email asking about the changes I have made to it. They said that they have been busy for quite sometime and hadn't checked in to see what I have been up to with this place or small corner of the(my) world.

That brought me back to when I first started this site 2 years ago. Huh, only 2 years ago, actually it's a few months less than that. Seems like so long ago. I guess I've been a busy.

So as it started, I had some space on myspace to learn and understand the hype about it and was pretty bored with it rather quickly. I'm still pretty bored with myspace and others like and don't see the purpose(I'll explain that another time). So I decided to write myself a little application for my myspace page(for fun) in my spare time. It was a simple newsreader application for sports headline news(specifically for the News Jersey Devils hockey club) that read in an xml file and displayed a headline and article text in rotation with a fade out between articles. It allowed a click on the headline to open a new window to read the full article.

I was happy to find this instructional video on ironing, but I'm still not understanding how to iron after watching this a dozen times or so. I actually didn't notice any instructions on ironing. I guess I should watch it again, aye!

So, I was writing some drag and drop applications and everything was working smoothly, but in Internet Explorer I was experiencing some issue of jagged text on the original draggable if the drop was not completed. I did a few searches to see if I could find anyone else that had experienced this and found nothing although I have seen this happening before on other drag and drop applications.

So I started to break it down. It seems to only happens on nested divs when you have some content set with font-weight:bold and no background-color set. I was relying on the background color from the parent div. This also happens when you use css font: with defined sizes (large, x-large, etc);

Today the yahoo homepage gave tribute to the Devils ex-captain and Hockey Hall of Famer for something that he did 13 years ago.


That's certainly a tribute and pretty damn cool.

That was quick!

In just a short time after Sean Avery of the NY Rangers was dancing on the ice waving his hands and stick in the face,  of the defending netminder Martin Brodeur, the National Hockey League went to the rule books and changed it.

Now if a player attempts to screen a goalie, while having his back to the play and waving his hands and stick directly in the goalies face, that player will be assessed a 2 minute penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct and take some time to cool off in the sin bin.

Acid tests are the tests that browsers are put through to test basic web standards. To date there are 3 tests.

Named aptly:

    Acid1.
    Acid2.
    Acid3.

Acid 1 was first developed in 1998 by Todd Fahrner and was important in establishing a simple standard in early browser, especially related to CSS1 rendering and specs.

Acid 2 was released in April of 2005. This test is still being used to test CSS2 rendering and specs. Later that year in October, Safari 2.0.2 became the first browser to pass the test. Soon to follow was Opera and Konqueror. To no surprise IE has not past the test, but a big surprise is that FireFox, still has yet to get a passing grade. Although IE8 which is in Beta testing and FireFox 3 are both said to be close to passing.(We'll see).

Web Slices is a new and  pretty cool feature in the soon to be released IE8. Yes, I said IE8.

Anyway, Web Slices are like a small pop up div in a web page, that's called a Tool Tip. Except that a Web Slice does work in a Web page but, instead works on the browser.

We all have Web Sites that we visit a few or several times per day and have those sites bookmarked for easy. access. So instead of actually visiting the site you can click or hover over the bookmark in your browser to see what's new on that site. Any content can be in the Web Slice such as stock figures, Weather/Temp Reports, or the newest News Headlines. If you choose to visit the site then you can click on the Web Slice and go directly to the page that's serving up that content.

I still think this is probably one of the greatest stand up bits of all time. This bit is almost 27 years old and still makes me laugh.



If you were to look in my files and directories you will find a folder called stuff inside a folder called stuff that contains a stuff.js, stuff.html, stuff.css, and maybe a stuff.swf. It has become such a habit for me to do this. You'll even find in my code variables, functions, or classes called stuff (But I'm trying to change this, by using more meaningful names such as doStuff(), myStuff(), or var countStuff = 0;)

The NJ Devils stopped a 3-0 deficit in the best of 7 series to make it 2-1 against the NY Rangers by winning in overtime. Thank god.

Mad dog(John Madden) netted his 2nd goal of the playoffs on an unassisted goal at 6:01 of overtime for the Devils to win 4-3 making the series 2-1 Rangers.

Home ice has not been an advantage in the first round of the playoffs this year for a few of the series so far.

Zach Parise got his first goal of the playoffs after losing his front teeth to a cross check to the mouth last game. This is the playoffs baby. Whooooaaa.

Patrik Elias and Sergei Brylin also got their 1st goals of the playoffs in game 3 against the NY Rangers.

So it's not a concept anymore. It's the new look of this site.

If you are visiting this site with an IE Browser of version 6 or less you probably saw my warning display. And so the site looks broken and bad to you. I'm not sorry about that(Upgrade your browser, it doesn't cost you anything). Or switch to Safari or my Preferred Browser Firefox.

This site uses png images for it's layout and there are fixes around that can handle the rendering in IE for png's, but I have not found one that works for css background images and the repeating of that image.

I have also incorporated some jQuery plugins and some custom code to have it the way that I envisioned. I have to say, that it turn out slightly better than I thought it would, but I have other changes to implement as well for the new design. Such as the entry images and logos don't look right now with a black background.

This is an awesome plugin. No more worrying about 3 different css shadow techniques for cross browser compliance or using images for shadowing.

The only issue that I find is in Safari where sometimes the shadow does not take up the cordinates that you specifed for it. Example is by writing "$('.myDiv').dropShadow({left:6, top:6, blur:2});" you might find that safari will set the top to -6. Refreshing the page will sometimes fix this, are we supposed to tell our users to do that? I think not. But this Safari glitch is noted in documents for dropShadow and so they suggest you toy around with it a bit to find the fix.

One feature that I really like is with shadowing images. The default shadow color for dropShadow is black, but now for images. The shadow will actually use the colors of the image. Very cool for styling. At least this happens with jpegs and pngs. I haven't tested gifs yet.

So I have been working and playing around with a new design for this blog and have a pretty nice concept(I think). I'm not sure if I'm going to use it cause, I don't think it fits in with some aspects of this blog.

It also fails because of png images as CSS backgrounds and a minor layout glitch in browser IE6 and less. But seems to work well in IE7, Firefox, and Safari on a PC.

I am debating on whether I should adapt it for IE6 and actually put it to use.

I have used the jQuery Plugin Drop Shadow to help with the design concept.

If you haven't experienced the drag and drop bug with IE 6/7 yet, you might, and so I am posting a fix to make to the core library. The bug occurs at the offset function when trying to access the offsetParent. After dragging and dropping the first element I was getting a error in IE of "Object Required". This was not happening in FF and I originally thought it was related to an Ajax call and the onload functions not executing and assigning the drag and drop attributes after the the Ajax call was complete. I was wrong.

So I am providing a fix for the IE error that has to be applied to the jQuery core library.

We have all wished we could go off on someone like this in one way or another. Maybe with a quick right hook to the jaw.

The Web Developer extension for Firefox is an invaluable tool when you are writing JavaScript that dynamically changes the HTML on a Web page. The feature I use most often is:

Web Developer > View Source > View Generated Source

This shows you the HTML as it is at this moment in time, rather than the original HTML that came down the pipe.

The trick for IE is to paste the following line of code in it's entirety into the address bar and voila!
